Mother of the Bride.

One of the proudest and most emotional people of the wedding day.
Read on to learn about the mother of the bride duties and dress tips.

Mother of the bride duties

Every Mother wants to be involved in their daughters wedding and will almost certainly do as much as they can to help. Some help just comes from love but their are specific duties to take into account. These are.

1. Become involved with the bride and groom when trying to find the best location for both the wedding and the reception. The bride's mother will also coordinate efforts with her friends or colleagues to gain recommendations.

2. The bride's mother will also serve as the primary contact for the wedding coordinator. This means that she will not necessarily make the decisions, although for some things, she might, but she would gather information and then help keep things organized.

3. Helping the bride in choosing her wedding dress is also an important duty for the mother, as well as going to the fittings and helping get dressed on the morning of the wedding.

4. The mother will look after the main guest list, which consists of gathering names that have returned their invitations and then compiling them into an on-going list.

5. If the bride and groom were interested in having an ethnic wedding or incorporating family tradition or heirlooms into the ceremony or reception, the bride's mother would take care of all the research.

6. The bridal shower and rehearsal dinner are attended by the bride's mother and she will usually be involved in some of the planning.

7. If the bride's father has passed away or is for some reason unable to get back, then the bride's mother should be responsible for walking the bride down the aisle and giving her away to the groom.

A Simple guide to dressing the mother of the bride and other important guests

Not surprisingly, everyone wants to look their very best, especially bearing in mind that they will be captured on film for the wedding album. So here are a few pointers to bear in mind when selecting a wedding outfit.

1. Try to liaise with the bride’s mother so that colours complement each other.

2. Always wear a matching hat as this creates uniformity and does not detract from the bride herself.

3. It may seem obvious but do select an outfit which is comfortable to wear and not too tight, bearing in mind that you will be wearing it for several hours, not only during the ceremony, but possibly prolonged festivities at the reception. Also make sure that your outfit does not crease too much.

4. Wear a colour that flatters you. There is no point in wearing a fashionable colour if it doesn't’t look good on you.

It’s not just the bride who can benefit from styling suggestions. Top Tips for buying the wedding outfit to suit you!

For the fuller figure

  • Always buy the right size
  • Choose well cut, roomy and comfortable clothes
  • Look for vertical and diagonal styling
  • Make a bold statement with large accessories
  • Jackets & tops should be quite long
  • Single breasted jackets give a more slimming silhouette

For the petite figure

  • Avoid colours blocking, try single colour – it can be very attractive and slimming
  • Think small to medium-scale accessories
  • Avoid flat shoes, a medium heel will give that extra inch or two

Style
An elegant look is achieved by using only 2 colours throughout the outfit

Underwear
Having the right-sized bra will greatly improve your outfit, remember to be professionally measured

Accessories
When choosing a hat, check the brim is no wider than your shoulders
The hat must be in proportion to the rest of your body e.g. a larger-boned woman would need a substantial hat and a small-boned woman would need a smaller scale hat
Choose matt handbags as the eye is drawn to shiny and light objects. If using a shoulder bag, the right length of strap is important, so that it does not position itself on your widest point i.e. hips
Shoes and bags do not have to match when wearing brown or black. A brown bag and black shoes would look great
The wrong choice in shoes can make you look inappropriate. The general rule in shoes is that they should be the same intensity or darker than the hemline. Never lighter
When shopping for that special outfit, take the appropriate shoe and carefully choose stocking/tights colour to create the perfect finish

Whether you’re going for clean elegant lines; strapless, boned & fitted; seductive or ethereal, the tips above will help ensure your shopping trip is hassle free.
